photo-patterned defectgrid to stabilize bulk disclinations
Teaser text
A photo-patterned defectgrid at one of the substrates allows to stabilize a multitude of metastable disclination lines in a nematic liquid crystal cell. In our studies, we pattern the bottom surface with a periodic array of +-1/2 defects and combine this with uniform planar or uniform homeotropic anchoring at the top interface. Different types of horizontal, vertical and diagonal disclinations are formed and their properties are studied experimentally and with the help of numerical simulations.
