Let’s explore in this seminar how the combination of liquid crystal with patterned photo-alignment at the substrates can lead to the self-organization of fascinating liquid crystalline superstructures. A variety of anchoring patterns can be used in combination with different types of liquid crystal (chiral and achiral) and application of an electric field can make the structures tunable. This leads to a wealth of possibilities and can be applied in electro-optic devices such as diffraction gratings and lasers.
